Shrine of the Korean Martyrs... July 25

I stayed close to home this weekend and went to the Shrine of the Korean Martyrs, located where a hundred years ago thousands of Catholics were beheaded and thrown over the edge of a cliff here in Seoul.

Here is one of the many peices of art that depict the persecution found in the meuseum.

You can see behind me the shrine on the "Hill of Beheading"

Only a few martyrs are buried here, where they knew the details of the people. Since one could be executed without trail, most would have been martyred without any written record and their remains cast into the river.

Preists would have dressed in farmer's clothing like this to avoid detection.

Here are some of the implements used. Behind them are pictures and descriptions of the various ways people would have been tourtured or put to death, including kneeing on coals with a weight across the thys. Most of the descriptions included words that are not on my vocabulary list at school....

Here are some of the historical artifacts of the churches during the time of the persecution. Don't worry, the irons and the circular cutter were not for torture, they are simply the tools for making hosts for communion!

Somthing more Mondane...

After a visit to the Shrine, Bosco and I had som refreshing cold noodles at the The Hyndai Department Store. They not only hire people to greet you as you walk in the store, but even have people to greet people as they come to park. Each greeter is equiped with a microphone and a handbill as custumers drive in to the parking structure!

Finally, an unexpected peice of American Culture---Rollerblades!
